Border-city mayors to vent about fence
Texas officials are invited to D.C. to provide a real-world view
— reported by the Houston Chronicle
Texas’ border-city mayors will get an opportunity next week to vent their concerns to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff about a controversial plan to fence off vast sections of the U.S.-Mexico border.
Though Congress last year ordered the Department of Homeland Security to build 700 miles of double-layered fencing at the southwest border, some Democrats newly in power on Capitol Hill are vowing to roll back the law. Republicans who support the fence, meanwhile, are urging President Bush to seek full funding for its construction in his upcoming budget proposal to Congress.
