Hispanic students learn how to organize
Summit aims to refine skills for immigration rights campaign
— reported by the Houston Chronicle
A coalition of mostly Hispanic college and high school students began laying the groundwork Saturday for holding a march this summer as a way of bringing attention to issues important to immigrants.
More than 100 people turned out for the Raza Youth Empowerment Summit at the University of Houston.
Organizers of the event said they are hoping to tap the same energy that led hundreds of local high school students to stage walkouts in protest of immigration laws earlier this spring. Similar walkouts were held elsewhere in the country as Congress debated immigration reform.
